How to properly mount your Ribcage AIR modified GoPro Hero4 camera on a 3DR Solo. How to properly balance the Solo gimbal using our Dead Weight gimbal balancing kit.
One of the great things about our Ribcage mod for GoPro Hero3/3+ and Hero4 is the fact that we use C-Mount as our lens mount (as well as M12 and CS-Mount). C-Mount was originally developed for film cameras back in the 1920’s so it’s almost 100 years old! It’s been used in film, television, Bolex, security, scientific machine vision cameras and more and there is a tremendous wealth of unused vintage lenses out there for the taking! One of the benefits of C-Mount is that you can connect just about anything!
We used a simple step up ring to C-Mount and connected them to our camera (available in our shop). The results are quite excellent even at 4K. They have a unique look not seen in modern lenses, especially in the bokeh. Currently the Ribcage is the best option to use all of these lenses!
There’s a whole world of life around you everywhere if you just stop to look a little closer. All of these creatures were filmed in a suburban backyard flower garden in Ottawa, Canada.
This video was shot entirely with a GoPro Hero4 Black modified with our Ribcage Mod Kit. A Computar 2/3″ 3.3X Macro Zoom lens was used.
Settings:
Color was graded in post using Adobe Speedgrade CC 2014. Frame rate slowed to 30fps in Premiere.
Captures were performed over two days at dusk as the insects were less likely to move away. An LED ring light was used for added illumination. As well a 2-axis macro focusing rail was used to make fine adjustments which made framing the shots much easier.
The 2/3″ 3.3X Macro Zoom lens is available in our shop:

We decided to shoot some demo footage from the air with our 4.4mm Low Distortion M12 lens using our new Phantom2 with Zenmuse H4-3D. This footage was shot in medium mode at 2.7K/30. We also used our new in-camera ND filters for the Hero4 – a 0.9 density filter was used in this case. A pack of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 ND filters will be available from our shop very shortly. They’ll help with ‘jello’ and provide a pleasing motion blur in bright conditions. The 4.4mm 4K M12 lens is available now for $99 USD in our shop. http://www.back-bone.ca/product/4-4mm-4k-low-distortion-m12/
